The Art of the Turkish Knot: Heritage Oushak and Textured Masterpieces by Shukla Brothers
When interior designers, luxury retailers, and high-end architectural firms source handmade rugs, the conversation almost always turns to the authenticity of the knot. Among the finest techniques in the world of handmade floor coverings is the Turkish Knot (also known as the Ghiordes or symmetric knot).
At Shukla Brothers, we have spent decades perfecting the intricate geometry and structural integrity of Turkish-knot weaving. By combining centuries-old Anatolian design heritage with our specialized hand-spinning techniques, we create custom Oushak and transitional rugs that stand apart in the global marketplace.
What Defines a True Turkish-Knot Rug?
Unlike the asymmetric Persian (Senneh) knot, the Turkish knot is symmetric. Each strand of wool is wrapped completely around two adjacent warp threads, locked securely, and cut before the next knot is tied. This dual-warp locking mechanism provides exceptional structural durability, making Turkish-knot rugs exceptionally resilient under heavy commercial and residential traffic.
1. The Single 10-Count Handspun Wool Advantage
One of the defining signatures of our workshop output is our specialized yarn preparation. We utilize single 10-count handspun wool for our Turkish-knot collections.
The Loop & Cut Effect: Because the wool is handspun rather than mechanically extruded, it retains its natural organic irregularities and lanolin content.
During the intricate hand-knotting process, this specific yarn thickness creates a natural loop-and-cut visual dynamic.
When our master artisans perform the final top clipping and finishing, the interplay between the handspun fibers produces a rich, multidimensional texture where a subtle loop effect blends seamlessly with a sheared cut-pile look, giving the rug an authentic, antique-washed character right off the loom.
2. Front vs. Back: The Structural Anatomy
A true mark of master-grade handmade craftsmanship lies in the contrast between the face and the reverse of the rug:
The Front (Face): Dense, plush, and expertly clipped. Because of the tight symmetry of the Turkish knot and the density of our single 10-count handspun wool, the cotton warp and weft are entirely hidden from view. The eye meets a continuous, uninterrupted sea of rich wool texture and complex chromatic abrash.
The Back (Reverse): Flip the rug over, and the structural integrity is revealed. The traditional cotton warp and weft grid is clearly visible, showcasing the crisp horizontal weft shots and vertical warp tension that guarantee the rug will lay flat and maintain its dimensional stability for generations.
Heritage Oushak Meets Modern Luxury
Our Turkish-knot portfolio heavily features Oushak-inspired designs. Historically originating from the town of Uşak in western Turkey, classic Oushak rugs are celebrated for their monumental, understated floral motifs, soft terracotta/pastal color palettes, and large-scale medallion layouts.
At Shukla Brothers, we reinterpret these heritage aesthetics for modern interior architecture:
Muted Color Palettes: Using natural vegetable and eco-friendly dyes to achieve faded, antique patinas (soft greys, muted sages, warm ivories, faded terracotta, and faded indigos).
Oversized Motifs: Scaled perfectly for contemporary great rooms, luxury hotel lobbies, and high-end residential living spaces.
Bespoke Customization: Through our 0 MOQ trade program and custom CAD development, interior designers can specify exact dimensions, custom Pantone/Pom-box colors, and modified knot densities.
